Curiosity and Innovation Problem Solving: How It Works in Practice

Most organizations don't struggle because they lack talent or resources. They struggle because they're trying to solve present problems with yesterday's thinking.

Today, technologies and customer expectations are constantly evolving.

The organizations that succeed are the ones that adapt to these changes before they're forced to. Many respond by looking for answers as quickly as possible. They launch initiatives, adopt new technologies, and search for best practices. 

Yet innovation rarely begins with an answer. It starts with a question1.

That's why I've become fascinated by the connection between curiosity and innovation. Over the years, I've found that some of the most effective problem solvers are the people who are willing to stay curious long enough to understand the problem everyone else thinks they've already solved.

Most Organizations Solve Problems Too Quickly

When a challenge appears, the instinct is to move directly into action.

Sales are down? Launch a new campaign.

Customer engagement is declining? Redesign the website.

Productivity is slipping? Implement a new tool.

The problem is that quick action doesn't always mean effective action. I've seen organizations invest significant time and money solving symptoms while the real issue remained untouched.

Curiosity-driven problem solving takes a different approach. Instead of immediately asking, "How do we fix this?" it starts by asking, "What's really happening here?"

That distinction matters. The quality of your solution is determined by the quality of your understanding. If you're solving the wrong problem, even the best execution won't produce meaningful results.

Curiosity Reveals Hidden Assumptions

One of the biggest obstacles to innovation is assumption.

Every industry, organization, and team develops beliefs about how things work. Over time, those beliefs become accepted as fact. People stop questioning them because they seem obvious.

However, assumptions have a habit of limiting possibilities.

Let’s take the example of Airbnb2. For decades, the hospitality industry operated under the assumption that travelers wanted to stay in hotels. Airbnb challenged that belief and asked a different question: “What if people were willing to stay in someone else's home if it offered a more affordable, authentic, or convenient experience?”

That single shift in thinking helped transform an entire industry.

This is where curiosity and innovation intersect. Curiosity encourages us to question what everyone else accepts. It helps us identify assumptions that have become invisible and explore alternatives that others overlook.

Whenever I encounter a complex problem, one of the first questions I ask is simple: "What are we assuming to be true?"

The answer reveals opportunities hiding in plain sight.

Looking Beyond Your Industry

Another mistake organizations make is searching for solutions exclusively within their own field.

When companies face a challenge, they look at competitors, industry reports, and familiar best practices. While there's value in understanding what others are doing, innovation rarely comes from copying the status quo.

Some of the most powerful breakthroughs occur when ideas move from one context to another.

Nike's Flyknit technology is a great example. The company didn't solve its challenge by looking exclusively at other footwear brands. It drew inspiration from manufacturing techniques and lightweight materials used in entirely different industries3. 

By looking beyond its traditional boundaries, Nike created something new.

Curious problem solvers ask different questions.

  • Who else has solved a similar challenge?

  • What can we learn from another industry?

  • How might a completely different organization approach this problem?

Often, the best ideas are already out there. They just exist in places we haven't thought to look.

Innovation Is Human, Not Technical

Whenever people talk about innovation today, the conversation quickly turns to technology.

More specifically, it turns to AI.

Don't get me wrong. AI is a remarkable tool. It can automate tasks, process information, and increase efficiency in ways that were unimaginable just a few years ago.

However, technology doesn't innovate. People do.

One of the biggest misconceptions I encounter is the belief that innovation is primarily a technical challenge. In reality, innovation is a human one. It's driven by curiosity, creativity, observation, and the willingness to ask questions others aren't asking.

Technology can help us execute ideas faster. It can help us explore possibilities more efficiently. What it can't do is replace the human instinct to wonder whether there's a better way.

That's why curiosity and innovation will always be connected, regardless of how advanced technology becomes.

We Tell People to Think Outside the Box, But Not How

Organizations love to encourage employees to think outside the box. The problem is that very few provide a process for doing it.

Curiosity-driven problem solving offers a practical alternative. Instead of waiting for inspiration to strike, it creates a structured way of approaching challenges.

  1. Question assumptions. Before searching for solutions, ask what you're taking for granted. What beliefs, processes, or constraints have gone unchallenged simply because they've existed for a long time?

  2. Look beyond your immediate environment. Some of the best ideas come from outside your industry. Spend a morning visiting another organization, attend an event in a completely different field, or study how others solve similar problems.

  3. Break problems into smaller parts. Large challenges can feel overwhelming. You can examine individual steps and identify where friction exists to uncover opportunities that would otherwise remain hidden.

  4. Seek different perspectives. Talk to customers, frontline employees, or people outside your team. A fresh perspective can reveal blind spots and lead to solutions you might never have considered on your own. 

These habits transform curiosity from an abstract concept into a repeatable process. Innovation becomes less about creativity and more about exploration.

Curiosity Turns Failure Into Insight

One of the most valuable aspects of curiosity is how it changes our relationship with failure.

Traditional thinking treats unsuccessful outcomes as evidence that something went wrong. Curious organizations see them differently. They treat them as information.

When an experiment doesn't produce the expected result, curiosity encourages us to investigate rather than assign blame.

  • What did we learn?

  • What surprised us?

  • What assumptions proved incorrect?

  • What should we test next?

This mindset doesn't eliminate mistakes, but it ensures that every outcome generates insight. After all, insight is usually the foundation of innovation.

The Real Competitive Advantage

Organizations spend a lot of time searching for the next big opportunity. In my experience, opportunities are rarely hidden. More often, they're overlooked because people stop asking questions.

Curiosity keeps organizations from becoming trapped by their own success. It prevents teams from accepting assumptions without examination. It helps leaders identify possibilities before competitors do.

That's why I believe curiosity and innovation are inseparable.
